Plymouth Herald

I AM always delighted to see the pages of animals up for adoption that are re-homed due to The Herald helping the shelters.

However, I get upset when at the back of your paper there are puppies and kittens for sale by people who are breeding more and more.

Some dogs are what we used to call mongrels but have been given fashionable mixed names and sold for hundreds of pounds.

I understand this is a source of revenue for you but wish you would have a 'no live animals' policy to help even more.

“I've seen British Bulldogs for sale at £1000 +. This breed has been so messed up it's a moral crime to breed them at all. Few can be born naturally as their heads are hugely over-sized, their airways are so badly compromised they can't breathe properly and there are other issues with eyes, skin folds and and legs as well. Buyer Beware - there are now 400 confirmed genetic defects involving pedigree dogs; these have been created by humans, through ignorance, miss-placed pride and greed. Unfortunately, after splashing out on an expensive accessory, many owners find their choice's pet insurance is inflated and the dog ends up in a shelter when the inevitable vet fees start coming in.”

“I agree, there are far too many animals being bred for the sake of financial gain.
And it's not fair. I'm surprised these people are allowed to get away with it for so long, Where the tax man's concerned, ect.
I'm not talking about registered breeders, I mean the ones who just breed to make extra money, and it's wrong .
These are living breathing beings ,who always pay the price for people's greed.
Do these people not watch the news?? Where animal sanctuaries up and down the country are bursting at the seams with unwanted animals. There should be new legislation brought in to stop it.”

“As long as there is a demand for designer animals it will never stop.”

“I agree with everything Z1982 says. Things are now getting out of control, and nothing is ever done in the animals best interest, it is all about money grabbing breeders.”

“I agree, there are far too many pets for sale these days, especially when there are always reports of the cats and dogs homes being completely full. There should be a new law that only licensed owners can breed animals and they should have to follow strict guide lines etc. All other animals should be spayed or neutered when they are still young.”
