On Thursday, February 14th, 2013, at 6pm, Plymouth City Roller Girls (PCRG) and eco-friendly junk band, Weapons of Sound, will join with activists around the world for ONE BILLION RISING, the largest day of action in the history of V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls.
ONE BILLION RISING IS:
A global strike.
An invitation to dance.
A call to men and women to refuse to participate in the status
quo until rape and rape culture ends.
An act of solidarity, demonstrating to women the
commonality of their struggles and their power in numbers.
A refusal to accept violence against women and girls as a given.
Plymouth City Roller Girls, the city’s DIY women’s roller derby league, saw that a One Billion Rising 2013 event hadn’t yet been organised in Plymouth and decided to club together with Plymouth-based eco-friendly junk band, Weapons of Sound, to put on an half-hour dance protest outside Drake Circus, at the top of Cornwall Street.
The Plymouth City Roller Girls ethos is all about empowering women and girls, our refs and volunteers, so they can thrive in roller derby and life. This cause fits exactly with what we stand for. The fact that one in three women in the world will be raped or beaten in her life is shocking. Rape, genital mutilation, domestic violence, none of it should happen and it must be stopped. We believe the only place a women should get hit is on the derby track!
ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.
On February 14, 2013, V-Day’s 15th anniversary, Plymouth City Roller Girls and Weapons of Sound will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men across the world as we express their outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.
The Plymouth event will happen from 6 - 6.30pm, outside Drake Circus, at the top of Cornwall Street. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in, meet the roller girls, dance with them to some awesome percussion beats by the UK’s original junk music band and add your voice to the global protest to stop violence against women.
