Pirates and Utopia: How the Western Indian Ocean has been narrated as a Pirate Haven

Dr Stephanie Jones explores themes of piracy in the Indian Ocean during the nineteenth century, focusing on literary and legal narratives of the Indian Ocean, and more broadly in the interdisciplinary field of law and literature. Since June 2007, she has been working on an AHRC-funded research project entitled ‘The Indian Ocean: narratives in literature and law’. She has published more than a dozen articles and essays on topics related to this research, including in Interventions, Cultural Geographies and Journal of East African Studies.
