Plymouth Good Neighbours is a new service set up support those people over the age of 50 who are alone or whose family and friends live too far away to visit every day. The Good Neighbours service will offer them company and help with the small practical things that can make all the difference. We want to help older people to be able to live not only independently, but happily, in their own homes and feel valued in their local communities.
The service is managed by WRVS and created in partnership with Plymouth City Council with the aim of making a real difference to the lives of those people most vulnerable to isolation and loneliness in the Plymouth area.
All of our Good Neighbours will all be volunteers, each giving just a few hours a week to help support others in their local community. Our volunteers will be fully trained, have a CRB check, and able to offer their new friends honest and open support – things like small jobs around the home, shopping, collecting pensions, going on outings, being around when workmen or officials visit or just stopping by and having a chat. Not big things, but things that can make a real difference.
The service is already running successfully in other areas of the country and in order to make Good Neighbours a success in Plymouth we need two important things, we need volunteers and we need people for them to help.
If you are aged 50+ and feel like you could do with some practical support, or if you know anyone who does, please contact us and we’ll talk through with you the support we can offer. There’s no commitment, no one will call on you unless you ask them to and the service is completely free of charge.
Or if you feel you could spare an hour or two a week to help someone in your local area, we’ll be more than happy to hear from you and talk through with you the benefits of becoming a volunteer including full training and the chance to make a real difference to the lives of other people in your local area.
Thank you for taking your time to read about the service and for helping us to make a difference to the lives of people across the city. If you’d like some support, to be a volunteer or just to find out more please call the WRVS Service Co-ordinator Maz Edwards on 01752517604 for a chat, or visit http://tinyurl.com/7optqlo and search for services in Plymouth.
