Too far to travel
WITH reference to Tom Prichard's letter on the airport putting a downside to naval personnel etc., in our dockyard and the proposed new T26 frigates being based at Plymouth, if memory serves the lack of convenience Plymouth has to London was a main reason why we started losing surface ships to Portsmouth, as the brass didn't like the travel time involved in getting to our ships.
So whether or not Viable gets the go-ahead, it seems it will have no effect on the mindset of naval top brass even if Devonport is a far better base. These men will not be inconvenienced with the time spent in travel here. It all points to faster and better links in travel, though. It appears that Viable and the airport could improve the situation for all of us, Navy ships or not.

“There is a airport in Exeter and in Newquay, why waste money on a Plymouth the competition is limited, the distance is not great. The navy fly out of Drake so why include them in the equation?”

“I don't think the airport made a difference to the decisions of the MoD. Defence cuts and the moving of facilities to cities where their MPs have more clout would be more probable.
Now, if Scotland do get independance, and that is in the balance, Plymouth could end up as the new nuclear sub base replacing Faslane. The dockyard would become significantly more important and the MoD might help Plymouth get better links with London. And there would be a growth in the number of supporting businesses.
Now, if all that sounds unrealistic then I agree, but no more unrealistic than Plymouth managing to re-open and maintain an airport of its own.”
