City's world of rock rocks Helen's world

Tuesday, August 26, 2008, 17:09

IF I WEREN'T TALKING TO YOU, RIGHT NOW I'D BE…

Reading a novel… any novel.

OTHER THAN MY JOB, I'M GOOD AT...

Remembering useless things.

BUT I'M BAD AT…

Cooking liver (though I love eating it!).

MY FAVOURITE EXHIBIT AT THE MUSEUM IS…

Usually something new every day. Apart from all the minerals, pickles and skeletons, I love the Martin Ware pots.

THE ONE THING I'D LOVE TO HAVE AT THE MUSEUM IS…

A mineral gallery. Devon and Cornwall have one of the richest histories of mining and have exported minerals and skills across the globe. We've a fabulous mineral collection, and they're beautiful, sparkly and have astounding natural shapes.

MUSEUMS HAVE THIS REPUTATION FOR BEING DUSTY, DULL PLACES BUT…

Lots are vibrant and entertaining, but I worry that some try too hard and miss the point a bit. I like museums that are packed to the rafters with odds and sods, where you discover something new each time you go in, but still get to see your old favourite that you remember from 30 years ago.

WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE…

An archaeologist, mainly to get the teachers to spell it. At that time I'd never heard of geology.

I WISH PEOPLE WOULD TAKE MORE NOTICE OF…

Rocks! I love geology and even though we don't get the chance to dig for dinosaur fossils around Plymouth, it doesn't make the geology any less exciting. We've had tropical seas, scorching hot deserts and volcanoes, and most can be seen in garden walls. I bore my son rigid talking about rocks!

MY FAVOURITE SUMMER'S DAY OUT IS…

Wembury, paddling and rock-pooling.

THE LAST BOOK I READ WAS…

Pies and Prejudice (In Search of the North) by Stuart Maconie. As a Yorkshire native this book made me laugh at some of the confusions I've encountered in the south.

ON TV I NEVER MISS…

Flog It!, hoping for a fabulous find….

PLYMOUTH'S GREAT BECAUSE…

It's surrounded by the sea and the moors. When I've lived away from Yorkshire I've always missed the moors. Coming over Dartmoor I immediately felt at home. Growing up 60 miles from the nearest coast the cry of "I can see the sea" was always a big event. Now I can shout it whenever I want.

BUT IF I COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT THE CITY, I'D…

Make people reconsider what's around. The city centre was built out of one of the most expensive building stones available, Portland Limestone. Look closely at the walls of Dingles; they're full of fossil shells over 150 million years old. Other bits of the city are beautiful too: the stained glass outside the Law Courts, the classic 1950s architecture of the Council House and some of the new university buildings: great!
