Diver Tom's joy at BBC award

TOM Daley has said he is over the moon at being crowned BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year for the second time.

As reported in The Herald on Monday, the 15-year-old world champion diver received the accolade at a glittering ceremony in Sheffield on Sunday night.

Tom, a student at Plymouth College, beat tennis starlet Heather Watson and sprinter Jodie Williams to the title in a vote by viewers.

The diving star was also one of 10 nominations in the main Sports Personality of the Year award, which was won by Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs.

Runners-up were Formula One world champion Jenson Button, and athlete Jessica Ennis, while other nominees included England cricket captain Andrew Strauss, tennis ace Andrew Murray and world heavyweight boxing champion David Haye.

Speaking from Sheffield yesterday, where he had remained to film a Sport Relief broadcast with comedian James Corden, Tom told The Herald: "It was such a good night and they put on such a good show. It was an honour to receive the award.

"I've met loads of new people like Jenson Button and Ryan Giggs, all the top 10. It's a nice Christmas present!"

He was due back in Plymouth today after heading back from Sheffield yesterday afternoon.

Tom, who first won the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award in 2007, picked up gold in individual diving at the world championships in Rome this summer. Last month, the youngster was named The Herald Sports Personality for the second time in three years and also carried off the trophy for The Herald's Champagne Moment for 2009, which captured the point at which Tom became Britain's first diving world champion in July.
