Recorders breaking down the borders

Wednesday, August 27, 2008, 16:35

IF the mere mention of recorders conjures up images of a noisy class of youngsters all vying to out-blow each other, then you need a dose of Consortium5.

This is actually a young, all-girl quintet who together play nine recorders of various shapes and sizes, ranging from the descant to a massive sub-bass over six feet tall.

As winners of the 2006 Deutsche Bank Pyramid Award for Performance, they were able to buy this set of Renaissance instruments which they will be using when they appear at St Mary's Church, Totnes, on Saturday, September 6, at 7.30pm.

Entitled Noyses, Sounds and Sweet Ayres, the programme will include some of the best Elizabethan and Jacobean recorder music, from the instrument's golden age.

The girls formed Consortium5 while students at the Royal Academy of Music, where Head of Historical Performance, conductor Laurence Cummings, said of them: "In my 10 years of teaching at the RAM, I have never come across a more exciting and marketable chamber combination. These girls are all very fine musicians and produce such a unified and beautiful sound."

Although the event actually opens the 2008/9 Totnes Early Music Society Concert Series and is part of the Totnes Festival, it should have a really wide overall appeal. But for those with a particular interest, it might be worth considering joining the society, for significant ticket price reductions over the season.

Tickets (£10, £5 young people and students) can be obtained in advance from the Totnes Festival Box Office on 01803 847070, from Totnes Bookshop or at the door.

For further information on the series and to subscribe, contact Jill Tomalin (01803 849414), or visit www.totnesearlymusic.org.uk.

Further concerts in the series feature flautist Ashley Solomon and Terence Charlston (harpsichord) with a programme of music by the Bach family and Telemann in October, whilst the December slot presents vocal group, Exaudi, this time in the Great Hall, Dartington. Duo Dorado commemorates the 300th anniversary of Purcell's death next February, Pantagruel appears in March, and vocal group, Stile Antico, concludes the season in May.

It's rare to get something for nothing these days, but if you make your way to the Public Hall, Liskeard, on Saturday September 6, at 7.30pm, local pianist Jonathan Delbridge is giving a free piano recital, where he will also be sharing something about his Christian faith.

Jonathan is well known as a pianist and organist in the Liskeard area, and has also played at venues across the UK, including York Minster, Norwich and Bradford cathedrals, and the Hall for Cornwall. He is also the music director at Grace Community Church, which is helping to support the event.

Jonathan is known for the wide appeal of his programmes, and this concert should be no exception, with its mix of classical works, jazz standards, and improvisations. Jonathan is also happy to take requests for the programme and these can be emailed to him via his website, www.jonathandelbridge.com. Although there is no admission charge, tickets may be obtained in advance form Liskeard Book Shop, on 01579 342112, if you'd like to guarantee your seat.

Despite the absence of any real summer this year, it's hard to believe the 2008 Dartington International Summer School finishes this weekend. Tonight marks the opening performance of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, given by students on the Advanced Opera Course, accompanied by the Dartington Festival Orchestra, and led by students from the Advanced Conducting class.

On Saturday and Sunday, there will be two additional performances for the general public, and these take place in the Great Hall, both starting at 7.30pm. Tickets (£23 reserved, £18 unreserved) are available from the Box Office on 01803 847070.
