Sonatas on the menu at lunchtime concert

Wednesday, September 17, 2008, 14:05

THE 16th International Lunchtime Concert Series gets under way on Thursday September 25 at 1pm, back in its regular haunt in the City Museum & Art Gallery, and features South Korean violinist Sulki Yu, and Alexander Karpeyev (piano).

Sulki won a scholarship to study at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she graduated in 2007 with First Class Honours. Russian-born, Alexander Karpeyev, similarly continued his musical education at the Guildhall, and is currently a postgraduate student. Their recital opens with Schubert's A major Sonata, D 574, and ends with Elgar's Violin Sonata in E minor, written towards the end of the First World War. The last of six sonatas for solo violin, Op 27, by the Belgian violinist and composer, Eugène Ysaÿe, forms the centrepiece of an interesting and varied programme. Tickets (£6.50 / £6.00 for Friends of Plymouth Museum & Art Gallery) are available in person from the Museum, Drake Circus, Plymouth PL4 8AJ, or by post, (cheque to 'Plymouth City Council' + SAE), and any unsold ones can be bought at the door. They are also available online (www.WeGotTickets.co.uk), but will be subject to an additional 50p booking charge. For further information on the whole season's concerts, please visit the Museum website (www.plymouth.gov.uk/museumconcerts). As each concert lasts only an hour, City Museum marketing and audience development officer, Jo Clarke, said: "Audiences might also like to spend some time looking at the exhibitions and permanent collections we've got on display, now that the Museum & Art Gallery has partially re-opened."

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the WARchild Concert, previously advertised as October 4, will now take place two weeks later on Saturday October 18 in the City Museum at 7pm. This year's event features guitarist Craig Ogden, flautist Judith Hall and Peter Cigleris (clarinet). Tickets cost £12, and a post-concert buffet supper is also available (£10). For more information and booking details, please contact Jeanie Moore (01752 770345). Meanwhile, there's a further opportunity to hear local-born, Peter Cigleris, when he appears with Trio Canteloube in the opening concert of the Kelly College Concert Series on Wednesday September 24 at 7.45pm in the Melvin Hall. Trio Canteloube features oboist, Jennie-Lee Keetley and Fiona Troon (bassoon), and always promises a mix of light and immediately appealing woodwind music. Tickets (£9 / £7 seniors / accompanied under 18s free) are available at the door. For further details please phone 01822 813162.

But if you prefer full-blooded organ music, then St Andrew's Church is the place to be, also on Wednesday September 24, when Liverpool Cathedral Organist, Ian Tracey, presents a 'Spectacular Tour' around some famous Parisian Organs at 7.30pm. Ian's programme includes music by Couperin, Saint-Saëns, Vierne, Widor and Tournemire. Tickets (£5) are available on the door.

Pupils and friends of Bronwen Davies, with accompanist, Sue Davies, present Sing with Joy at Saltash Wesley Methodist Church on Saturday September 20 at 7.30pm. Tickets (£5 / £2 children) are available from Piglets, in the town's Fore Street, by phoning 01752 842361, and at the door. All proceeds are going to Jeremiah's Journey, a charity originally set up at Derriford Hospital to counsel children who have suffered a close family bereavement.

Classical guitar fans should get along to hear Alison Smith tomorrow evening in Emmanuel Church at 7.30pm, whilst if you're a lover of orchestral music with piano, there's only one place to be on Saturday October 4, when the Philharmonia and pianist, Boris Berezovsky, play at Plymouth Pavilions at 7.30pm. Full details next week, but to make sure you don't miss out, contact the Box Office (0845 146 1460) or visit their website (www.plymouthpavilions.com) now!
