Thursday, November 12, 2009, 16:01

HAILED as one of the most appealing sax players on the US jazz scene and a leading purveyor of 'cool' jazz, Greg Abate makes a very welcome return to the Mermaid, Eggbuckland on Sunday night.

Greg will be bringing his appropriately-named Cool Septet – back, due to popular demand, after a successful debut appearance for Plymouth Jazz Club at the Morwellham Picnic earlier this year.

Greg has an incredible CV, which includes attending the famous Berklee College of Music in Boston and playing lead alto in the Ray Charles Orchestra as well as tenor sax in the Artie Shaw Orchestra.

A teacher of Jazz Studies at Rhode Island College, Greg holds workshops around the US and Europe.

He has also found time to make a variety of records with his own band and was nominated for a Grammy Award in four categories for his 2004 recording Evolution.

Tickets, available at the door, cost £7 for visitors, £5 for members, £3 for students.

They can be bought in advance from Maestro's, Ebrington Street, or call 01752 847611 for more details.
