PEOPLE starting university in Plymouth this year should "look out for one another", says student leader Jazz Singh-Khaira.

Ms Singh-Khaira said university was not just about getting a degree.

She urged this year's intake of students to get the most out of "the things you do and the people you meet".

"There are more than 100 clubs and societies to choose from, offering anything from basketball to big band," she said in a welcome message.

"There's something for everyone, providing opportunities to learn new skills and meet new people.

"Don't forget to introduce yourself to your neighbours .

"You should look out for one another throughout your year."

She said students should not worry if they felt a little lost.

"Everyone else is in the same boat, but if you do find yourself struggling to get to grips with it all, remember your Students' Union is here for you.

"You can come in and have a chat with a student officer or if it's confidential, independent advice you need, our advice centre is located opposite the library, beside the sandwich shop.

"During welcome week our lovely Freshers' Angels will be on hand to show you around and share the city's best-kept secrets."

Students elect the full-time and part-time UPSU officers. The full time sabbatical officers (or Sabbs) take a year out of study to represent the students.

The Sabbs are held to account by the part-time officers, who sit on Student Parliament, which meets to discuss student issues, vote on policy and run campaigns on behalf of students.

"Being a membership organisation we really do value everyone's opinion and anyone can attend Parliament or forums and run in our elections," Ms Singh-Khaira said.

"Believe it or not, university isn't just about getting a degree. You will get so much out of the things you do and the people you meet.

"The most important thing is – whether you are from Plymstock or Peru – that you have a great time at Plymouth University.

"It's all about the journey but if along the way there is something you want to change or that you'd like us to do please do get in touch with me at president@upsu.com.

"As you start your journey I have no doubt you will have a great time.

"Welcome Weeks will be packed full of inductions and activities where you'll get to know the university and surrounding areas."

“I live in Mutley and the nightly noise from drinkers making their way noisily down my road after drinking on Mutley Plain/North Hill continued unabated through the summer months.

This confirms what I have always suspected (from the accents and ages of the people stumbling down my road) that the problems emanate more from the local populace than they do from the students. Of course there are some badly behaved students but, on the whole, I find them to be polite, helpful and a credit to their families. Not something that I can say about a lot of the local louts (many of whom look to be in their 30s and 40s) who seem to think that my street is suitable for shouting, swearing, vandalising, urinating etc at all hours of the night.

Jannercide - have you actually tried engaging with the students rather than just assuming that all the social problems in the area are down to them? They aren't!”

If there's a computer club I might contact them to come sort out my PC next time it packs up and slip them £20 for their trouble; for example the local shop charges me an outrageous £40 to re-install Win XP..;)”

“I know for a fact that the staff in the sandwich shop have drilled a hole in the wall so they can listen to all the 'confidential' chats and have a good gossip about it. Please remember that, student readers, just in case you intend to go in there to discuss issues such as unnatural urges, or genital warts.”

“Perhaps you could show some respect too, Jannercide, by not tarring all students with the same brush.”

“"You should look out for one another throughout your year."

You should also show some respect for the environment you live in and the permanent residence who live in your neighbourhood.”
