I learnt my lesson, but times have changed
IN 1937, I was aged seven when I was caught stealing apples from an orchard by the local Police Sergeant. He put me in a half Nelson and frog marched me to the owner of the orchard; made me give the apples back, and apologise.
He then gave me one almighty cuff around the ear and said, "Now you little bugger, don't you do that again!"
And do you know what, I never did. But hey, just guess what would happen to that Police Sergeant today!
Oh, yes he made me cry, but heaven help me if I had gone home crying to my dad, for I would have had another belting off him.

But today? The parents would sue the copper for assault, he would lose his job and his pension and be sent to prison and I would have grown up thinking I could get away with things. Things sure ain't what they use to be.

“Devonview where in my comment did I advocate hitting kids? I said that too many parents are not doing their job properly and teaching their offspring discipline and respect for others.”

“Its not 1937 anymore....theres ur problem mate. You can not hold present society consistant with the values of the past.....an it works both ways, U say nowdays the copper would be sued I say nowdays the copper would have most likly tazed or baton charged you using excessive force, the days where police were content with giving a 'clip round the ear' are long gone”

“josdave, I never hit my children and they have grown up to be model citizens. But, actually, within reason, I don't object to the very occasional light tap from a loving parent. It's when it becomes either random from authority or institutionalised that I object. If you look back at records that schools had to keep (and that's ignoring the unrecorded assaults by adults) of corporal punishment the same names occurred constantly in individual schools. No deterrent for those! All it taught them was violence was acceptable. There may have been the occasional child who didn't transgress because of fear of the consequences but the cost was huge.”

“Get real devonlife it's high time this ridiculous PC mentality was taken out of life. Many of the old methods like that mentioned were a real deterrent and far more effective than saying " there's a good boy don't do that again please". We are at the point where children are taught from an early age that nobody can touch them without fear of an assault charge and those, far too many unfortunately, who don't have discipline and respect for others drilled into them by their parents from an early age will grow up to enter the justice system.”

“So, hitting kids until they stop doing something is what you would propose?”
