SO WHAT is new? - no one listens.

After weeks of reading about the incinerator, the airport, litter, dog poo, speeders in Gdynia Way, Whitleigh Community Centre, Palace Theatre, etc, what has changed?

As I have mentioned in my letters to Your Say time and time again, who reads, who listens?

The disease spreads from local government to Parliament, we go from disaster to disaster.

What we need are the best brains from industry, finance, health, the military and members of all three political parties to pull this country and its citizens up by the scruff of the neck, give it a good shake and start all over again.

Perhaps it is already happening. When I picked up The Herald on September 3 and read that Sutton Harbour Holdings had the guts to put forward a sensible plan to develop that wasteland known as the city airport with much needed housing, business units, student facilities, open space, etc.

If the Herald and the Viable group are so keen on dreaming about an airport for Plymouth, may I suggest they look at the Sherford valley site or the ex RAF airfield at Yelverton.

If the A303/A30 is dualled and a fast rail link to Heathrow completed, then who needs the airport. Perhaps the Government could build the Heathrow extension in Plymouth.

    The answer is BoJo.

Forget about political parties, he is the outstanding leader of his generation and the sooner he replaces Cameron the better.

“I haven't heard a good business-backed comment on here since the whole story about Viable started. It's all 'wishful thinking' and arrogant 'tantrums' over a closed airfield. Where are the backers? Where are the entrepeneurs with fat wallets looking for a profitable airport to underwrite?
    Very quiet, isn't it?”

“I disagree that Sutton Harbour have brought up a 'sensible plan' for the airport...nothing sensible about it whatsoever.
To build an airport where you say Bill Hatherley, this would cost far more money and you are better off revamping the Roborough site as it has the remains of the airport anyway.
Plymouth certainly does NOT need more housing or student accommodation. Please don't make me laugh, please!
However, no-one will want to listen to you, as you sound anti-airport for Plymouth, perhaps a good sign. I will say this; SAVE PLYMOUTH CITY AIRPORT! SUPPORT VIABLE! Viable are certainly not dreaming.”

“Ah Bill. Your sentiments are to be applauded. You, too, can see the futility of the Viable option for the airport. But, I have to say I disagree with the other options you mentioned for an airport site.
To be successful an airport must have sufficient space for international capacity, both in terms of aircraft and passengers. Yelverton is too small an area for this sort of development and, more realistically, there are too mant influential residents in the Yelverton area to allow that to happen.
Sherford is better but alreay has plans for a new town/suburb and it probably is suited ot this sort of development.

No, what's needed, if we need an airport at all, which I doubt, is a large relatively flat piece of real-estate away from 132kv pylons where the development of an international airport won't be impeded by lack of space. It will never happen, of course. It has as much chance of happening as Viable starting up and running the old airport.”
