Why I'm backing the City of Culture bid: Ron Wheeler
I am supporting this bid because it would do wonders for this worthy city, battered by war and the burden of bearing much for the country's defence in the past and present, but needing to revitalise and see its best assets in a newer light.
Entering the City of Culture race will help our children to aspire to greater things, and believe in ourselves.

The Theatre Royal with its building improvements begun, and TR2 which launches national touring companies, together with leading entertainers at the Pavilions and the thriving amateur dramatics field project our skills in the performing arts.
Beryl Cook and Robert Lenkiewicz are past contemporary artists of national fame. Our sporting prowess with Olympic swimming and diving successes, our basketball team are current fourth nationally, follow in the footsteps of past sporting successes with Argyle and Albion.

Our maritime heritage and the unique waterfront and national aquarium and thriving sailing and yachting clubs are unmatched in the UK.
Many faithful institutions such as the Plymouth Arts Centre, the Athenaeum, the Guildhall, the International Music series and Plymouth churches have been and continue to be venues for music and art.
They are now reinforced by Penisula Arts with Plymouth University and the modern Plymouth College of Arts.

“More propaganda from the Herald. Where's the balance from anybody who isn't backing the bid, or does the editor know best as usual?”

“This man sounds just the ticket to follow the Athenaeum. They pull in the seriously weird of Plymouth: the Freemasons and bible-punchers. These are the sort of people who shunned Lenkiewicz when he tried to lead the way in how Plymouth could be as they were afraid of his individuality.”
