Plymouth is bidding to be named UK City of Culture 2017. We are asking the people of the city to speak up to support the move. Today Barbara Bridgman, of Cremyll Keelboats, lends her support to the campaign.

From a maritime heritage perspective, Plymouth is surely well placed to become a City of Culture. In all frankness it should have already happened in view of the town's relevance in maritime history.

As a Navy defence outpost Plymouth has always played a vital role in securing Great Britain's extended control of the seas. Its architecture speaks of a great Navy mechanism founded on discipline, innovation and its people's resilience.

Plymouth can claim to have given birth to famous sailors or be chosen like the starting point for heroic deeds and great adventures. Nowadays its maritime heritage is as strong as ever and most of the town's industry relies on its expertise spanning across a broad range of marine fields: from the marine sciences and technologies developed at its thriving university to marine academies dedicated to forge new generations of engineers and manufacturers within the marine industry.

Skilled boat builders and sailors find in Plymouth and its rivers a nesting pot for developing their trades and share their knowledge.

Perhaps the idea of establishing a heritage university dedicated to Plymouth's valuable history will introduce the wider public to learn about this town's unique maritime features.
