'Why I'm backing Plymouth's City of Culture bid' - Gareth Hart
Plymouth is bidding to be named UK City of Culture 2017. We are asking the people of the city to speak up to support the move. Today Gareth Hart, director of Iridescent Ideas CIC, lends his support to the campaign.
Plymouth's maritime heritage is unparalleled and renowned but our culture is a hidden jewel. Winning City of Culture status will unearth this gem for the rest of the world to experience.
I am a relative newcomer to the city but have fallen in love with it. Through my work as a social enterprise business adviser I meet scores of fantastic and inspiring cultural organizations which make Plymouth a fabulous place to live and work.
Alongside the well-known, superlative icons such as the Theatre Royal, Plymouth Arts Centre and the Barbican Theatre, City of Culture status will shine a light on the work of smaller but vital social enterprise creative businesses such as Attik Dance, The Word Machine, Nom de Strip, Street Factory, Emerge and Plymouth Dance to name but a handful.

All these and many more create a sparkling cultural scene that deserves exposure to the wider world.
Plymouth has much to shout about and needs to confidently and vividly assert itself on the global stage. We have the power to dazzle, let's get behind the bid and reveal Plymouth as the place to bask in culture in 2017.

“why are there never any story's on here from people who are against the city of culture bid ? One sided reporting by the Herald yet again. Why am I not backing the bid for Plymouth, city of cultur ? All the chavs that pollute this city mean I'm ashamed to say this is where I was born & raised . The short sighted council who seem to be doing nothing more than to feather their own nest's. End of...”
