'Why I'm backing Plymouth's City of Culture bid' - Gary Streeter
Plymouth is bidding to be named UK City of Culture 2017. We are asking the people of the city to speak up to support the move. Today Gary Streeter MP lends his support to the campaign.
When I first came to Plymouth in 1979 it would have been unthinkable to apply for city of culture status: a somewhat sterile naval/dockyard town greeted us.

Gary Streeter MP
What a transformation since then: the renowned Theatre Royal and Drum, home to so many outstanding performances; the Pavilions where we took the kids to see Kylie Minogue and which attracts bands and singers to suit every taste and age group; the Barbican theatre where so many would-be thespians cut their teeth; the pulsating restaurant and cafe life, the vibrancy that the growing student population continues to bring, the hustle and bustle of the cinemas and clubs.
Major events from international firework competitions to the Lord Mayor's Parade; the rich diversity that so many people from other nations have brought – I think especially of the exquisite dance and musical events put on by the South Asian Society; the dynamic role played by the churches and other faith groups in our city's life; the street life, the waterfront, the voluntary sector.

“Gary Streeter MP only ever appears in the news when he finds a bandwagon to jump on which will net him press column inches. He has a safe seat election wise and he knows it. I am already sickened by the news locally that Viv is to be the new Lord Mayor and all the column inches she will take up with photographs of her 'representing' the folk of Plymouth. I would love to hear that either Viv has realised how unpopular she is as choice for Mayor and steps down or alternatively Mr Streeter fights a marginal seat in the next election but I will not hold my breath for either outcome as neither will ever happen as they self publicise and know which side their bread is buttered.”

“Unfortunately when you live in your own local world you cannot see the wood from the trees and this is true whichever country you live in.
Having lived away from Plymouth for over 40 years in a different country I can see the downward spiral that has occurred in Plymouth to a state of delapidation and dreariness.
The population has a low level of culture and appreciation of its surroundings and until that is addressed there will not be much progress.
It saddens me to see.”

“funny how my last comment was taken down! I still can't believe the Herald publish this rubbish. there is more pressing news people want to hear = primarily are they safe, secure, won't get stabbed etc. If this blog is taken away, then it just goes to show how far up there own a***s they are. What happened to free speech, my "Human Right"”

“Can't believe after all the unrest in recent weeks in Plymouth, and with the recent murders, crime etc that the Herald decides to put this story as priority when you log in - GET REAL. Or is it that if they didn't they would be accused of being anti-gay!!”

“If I was running the bid for this comedy I would be expecting some sort of industrial espionage to take place. Hacked e-mails and phone calls etc. There is a lot of money at stake here and no doubt some underhand dealings will shuffle in the attempt to get hold of it. Cynical this may be but I've seen the inner workings of Plymouth and don' like what I've experienced. My cousin is also a former Lord Mayor so I really have seen it all.”

“As Mr Streeter says a lot has happened in Plymouth in the past 25 years including the success of the Theatre Royal -Was it three shows which started in Plymouth then running in Shaftsbury Avenue at the same time?. But when the Theatre Royal opened it had enough detractors Whingeing has been going on in Plymouth, a long fortunately normally not to much effect.
Thank you Mr Streeter for your generous words about Plymouth.”
