Plymouth is bidding to be named UK City of Culture 2017. We are asking the people of the city to speak up to support the move. Today Plymouth Argyle chairman James Brent lends his support to the campaign.

I am 100 per cent behind the bid to be City of Culture 2017. It is taking the city towards Mayflower 2020 when we celebrate our great maritime history and the part Plymouth played in the founding of modern America.

I think we are making great strides as a city to obtaining the mantel of leisure and sporting capital of the South West. The Life Centre is a stunning asset and it is getting huge footfall. It is not just Olympic divers which get to use world class facilities – it is now available to the whole of Plymouth. The Theatre Royal is one of the highest quality venues outside of London with brilliant productions and is going through a great facelift.

And with Home Park and the Pavilions undergoing similar improvements we have a pretty good base to build on, so by 2017 we will be ready to host national celebrations throughout the year.If you look at The Herald's Greatest Janner Competition, two out of the top three – Tom Daley and Chris Webb, Argyle president – are young people.

People complain that the city's youth are not coming through but the competition proves that we have a talented future emerging.

“"And with Home Park and the Pavilions undergoing similar improvements"
    WHEN !!!!!!!!!!!
The mayflower stand at Home park remains derelict and not one brick has been laid at the Pavillions despite the £2 million given to Brent a year ago from OUR money.
This bid is a sham and yet another excuse for the ruling elite to line their own pockets with OUR money.”

“Presumably we'll need the airport back for all the pigs that might be flying!

For all the flurry of self-promoting propaganda the Herald is happy to publish (after all, it's cheaper than journalism), not one 'supporter' seems able to specify what the title of UK City of Culture will actually bring with it.”

    “CITY OF CULTURE
Well done Plymouth for trying and why not?
Don't all you negative people out there understand that perhaps if we do win this bid that this might of course lead to people actually listening to the fact that Plymouth needs an Airport… Little ACORNS and all that. I am pleased James Brent has bought Plymouth Argyle good on him nobody else would at the time and he saved their bacon… Football clubs at this level hardly make sound investments for rich returns so do not be too hard on Mr Brent. The Airport would better becoming a Community Co-operative perhaps.
Owned by 1/4 Individual shareholders. 1/4 Local Businesses 1/4 Local Authority, 1/4 MOD.
Now that might well be something for the Co-operative Council to think about I am sure James Brent may even be interested if the risk factor was spread a bit. I can see it now…
