Plymouth is bidding to be named UK City of Culture 2017. We are asking the people of the city to speak up to support the move. Today artist Sandy Wager lends her support to the campaign.

This is just what Plymouth needs to boost tourism. Plymouth has long been a cultural city but the visual arts have been hidden in the local galleries or behind closed doors where hundreds of unknown artists work but do not know how to become more involved, where the general public do not feel they belong or understand the arts.

This is our chance to bring colour to our grey concrete city, to make the arts more accessible to our residents in the making of art and music, but also to turn our city into a permanent festival of fun and public involvement, not just for us, but our children of the future too.

We have a rich history and that could be promoted more than it has been in the past. We could have Drake festivals, a walk of Plymouth fame, drop-in art workshops in the disused shops, with each suburb of Plymouth designing and hosting its own flag.
