'Why I'm backing Plymouth's City of Culture bid' - Steve Whiteway
Plymouth is bidding to be named UK City of Culture 2017. We are asking the people of the city to speak up to support the move. Today business leader Steve Whiteway lends his support to the campaign.
Plymouth the Ocean City and what a place to be! There are the knockers and the doers and I hope I am counted in the latter. We have probably one of the best networking scenes of any UK city, not to mention venues.

Take for example the National Marine Aquarium, whose presence we are blessed with, not only the head office of UK aquaria but also a great enhancement to the visitor experience as well as a vital barometer for the health of our coasts, jointly working with Plymouth University, the MBA and PML.Couple that with a vibrant Plymouth Chamber of Commerce in its 200th year, a new business supplement launch from our local paper, the great support of the educational establishments such as City College and their sustainability team, Plymouth's renewal and commitment of its Fairtrade status, and a forward thinking council and the key people are already in situ.
We now have the Food Plymouth Expo later this month at the Guildhall which sees local suppliers working towards a green economy which keeps financial circulation local and encourages green supply chains, lower carbon and opportunities for synergy marketing.

We have never been better prepared to embrace this challenge and the business talent and guidance in the city, is, I believe, unrivalled. There are plenty of detractors and grumps but those of us with vision and determination will always show the positive side of Plymouth. Plymouth Ocean City of Culture! We can make it happen!

“If Plymothians would support culture then Culture would come to Plymouth. How many of you go to the Theatre Royal for example? I bet more than half the people who go there come from outside Plymouth. Stop knocking Plymouth and those few who are trying to make it a better place!”

“Sorry but did I read this right? There are knockers darned right there are, all over the bottom end of town on fridays and saturdays yep those lovely knockers certainly get my vote!
PS I only did this post because when the editor nazis work out what my use of knockers implies they will ban it from future use. So much for free speach. you watch it will be a banned word! Probably ban me too again!”

“I love how the Herald only show the ones that want to promote it with taxpayers money . How about they ask these same ones to put up the dosh for this worthless certificate ? Who on earth would want this after the likes of Glasgow had it ?”

“The European City of Culture is the cultural award. The UK city of culture is the award that any city that has culture ignores. It's like comparing 1st prize of the euro millions lottery with the first prize of the Wembury parish hall's Easter raffle.”

“I think Plymouth is a wonderful place but not for it's culture. It is cultured like the stuff you grow in a petri dish.”
