'Why I'm backing Plymouth's City of Culture bid' - Steve Wheeler
Plymouth is bidding to be named UK City of Culture 2017. We are asking the people of the city to speak up to support the move. Today Steve Wheeler, associate professor of learning at Plymouth University, lends his support to the campaign.
I was born in Devonport, and although I spent most of my youth living elsewhere, I came back to settle here, because I have always considered Plymouth to be my home. There is simply nowhere in the world quite like it. My work at Plymouth University takes me around the globe, but wherever I find myself, I'm always pleased to arrive back home in Plymouth.

There is no atmosphere that compares to my city. It boasts a rich and unique cultural scene, which it has enjoyed and cultivated for centuries. Take a summer evening stroll along the seafront, or dine out on Sutton harbourside, and you'll know what I mean.
Artists from Sir Joshua Reynolds to Robert Lenkiewicz made their homes here, no doubt because many parts of Plymouth and its surrounding countryside are as captivating as they are inspiring.

Plymouth is a place to be creative. Music and art thrive at Plymouth University through the Peninsula Arts programme and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research, as they do throughout the rest of the city, sometimes in obscure and lesser known places. One example is the Cottonian collection of rare art, gifted in 1852 to the city by William Cotton, a selection of which can be seen on display in the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery.
