Plymouth is bidding to be named UK City of Culture 2017. We are asking the people of the city to speak up to support the move. Today councillor Vivien Pengelly lends her support to the campaign.

I am a Plymothian born, bred and educated in Plymouth. I love my home town and originally became a councillor to help improve our leisure facilities, especially the ones concerning sport. I firmly believe that a bid for Plymouth to become City of Culture must include sport in the leisure section.

We now have an excellent sports centre to compliment the Theatre Royal - the Life Centre. People of all ages now indulge in a great variety of physical activities, some to become the best in the world, others who enjoy being active in all kinds of different ways purely for pleasure.

Some of our great successes in diving and swimming do help our young children to aspire to greater things and believe in themselves. More people than ever are now participating in healthy activities.

It has already been stated that Plymouth is home to hundreds of cultural events. Our pictures of the Americas Cup went around the world and we want to have more of the same thing.

Plymouth is capable of putting on huge events and a successful bid for 2017 would help our cultural events whether in the arts, sports, music etc to showcase our beautiful city even more.

That can only be good for the economy. A successful bid for City of Culture 2017 can be enjoyed by everyone and also it is something the citizens of Plymouth can be very proud of.

Let's all get behind the bid, enjoy going for it and enjoy 2017 whatever happens.

“Here we go...'promote Pengelly' campaign by the Herald..the Herald, The Voice of Pengelly

Stop banging on about the America's Cup...most of the 'positive' Plymouth events are out of reach of most who live in the City - times are hard and we don't need you keep rubbing our noses in it.

Hey Viv how come you forgot to mention your flagship incinerator that you are so proud of?

Because its not something to be proud of and certainly not to be proud of what you have inflicted on people by being party to it and the location of it.

You have your Life Centre...we have our Death Centre!!”

“I was introduced to Mrs Pengelly at a political event in Plymouth about 18 months ago. I found her very cakey. She sounds like a 'special needs' case or something. I can't quite evaluate what the accurate terminology is but her actual voice does this city no favours.”
