5,000 take part in Plymouth Race for Life

Sunday, June 21, 2009, 15:02

MORE than 5,000 charity-minded women have  run five kilometres around the  Hoe to raise money for Cancer  Research UK.

Warm temperatures made the  task a real challenge for some,  but the importance of supporting the cause saw the runners complete the  task.

Thousands of supporters also  flocked to the Hoe watch their  loved ones participate.

Organisers believe a staggering  £222,000 was raised in sponsorship.

Many runners wore pink, with  some going further and dressing  as angels, fairies or sporting  pink wigs.

Many wore cards on their backs,  some including photographs,  dedicating their run to a friend  or relative.

Event manager, Scott Renken,  praised each and every participant in the Race for Life.

He said: “Once again it has been  absolutely amazing. We have  more than 5,000 women here  today who are all, without exception, inspiring.

“They are each doing something  incredible on behalf of something they feel very strongly  about.

“It’s just inspiring to watch and  be part of.”
