Artists ask 'Anyone for table tennis?'

Saturday, August 02, 2008, 23:00

MEMBERS of the public were challenged to an outdoor game of table tennis as part of a new art project touring the country.

The Global Player, which started its UK tour at the Exeter Phoenix, will travel to other cities including Brighton, Cardiff and Plymouth until Friday.

The piece of art, which is being used as a promotion for the Beijing Olympics, is a custom-built table-tennis table and is being towed around the streets and public spaces of five British cities.

Paula Crutchlow, spokeswoman for The Global Player, said: “Lots of people seemed up for a game but they had to say why they wanted to play. The point of it is to test out public space and to find out how communities gather.”

The table will be in the city centre today. After its British tour it will tour abroad until the London Olympics in 2012.

Game statistics and edited video highlights of games can be seen online at www.blindditch.org/globalplayer.
