Cremation cost is set to increase

07:00 - 28-June-2008

THE cost of cremation in Plymouth is going up as part of a bid to simplify the charges system – as well as to deal with a significant increase in the running costs of the city's two crematoria.

From July 1 the cost of being cremated at either Weston Mill or Efford will be £450, according to the city council. A delegated decision has been signed by council's cabinet member for streetscene and environmental regulation, Cllr Michael Leaves, who has authorised the change from a two-tier charges system to one simple fee.

The change brings the service into line with other authorities in the region – and will also help the council deal with an increase in overheads, including a 40 per cent rise in the price of gas, say bosses.

Cllr Leaves said: “We appreciate that people have to use this service at a very difficult time in their lives, but we need to make sure that we cover costs and keep levels as low as possible without compromising quality of service.”

Fees are charged for burials, cremation and other items such as memorial stones. The income covers the cost of maintaining cemeteries and facilities as well as investing in facilities in the future.

In 2006 the council completed a £100,000 refurbishment of Weston Mill chapel and a £60,000 improvement package for Efford.

In the last year it has also invested more than £70,000 improving paths and walkways – and is drawing up plans to ensure it complies with environmental protection regulations by installing anti-pollution equipment.

Cllr Leaves added: “Even with this increase, our fees are still less than Exeter's and Torbay's.”
