The ban, imposed on Dr Richard William Hughes, will remain in place for 18 months.
A spokesman for the GMC said cases such as this are referred to the Interim Orders Panel when a doctor is facing allegations of such a nature that it may be necessary for the protection of members of the public, or otherwise be in the public interest or in the interests of the doctor, for the doctor's registration to be restricted whilst the allegations are resolved.
The spokesman said that considerations taken into account included preserving public trust in the medical profession and maintaining good standards of conduct and performance.
The trainee Royal Naval doctor who worked at Derriford Hospital is set to appear before magistrates on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
Dr Richard Hughes, from Plymbridge Lane, Derriford, was arrested by Hampshire Constabulary earlier this year following a collision on the M3 motorway which led to the death of a motorcyclist.

He is due to appear before Winchester Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing on February 27.
Dr Hughes also appeared before Plymouth Magistrates earlier this year in connection with another matter.
He pleaded not guilty to seven counts of possessing indecent images of children between January 2004 and February this year.
He also pleaded not guilty to an eighth charge of possession of movies of indecent images of children.
Magistrates directed that Dr Hughes should stand trial at Crown Court. He was bailed to return for committal proceedings on December 19.
