Fifth Vietnamese drug factory raid in Plymouth

Saturday, September 27, 2008, 10:22

POLICE have raided another Vietnamese cannabis factory in the city – the fifth in just two weeks.

Officers said that they found drugs worth an estimated £60,000 in the house in Mount Gould Road on Friday night after stopping a Vietnamese man in the street.

The ordinary terraced house was converted into a factory for the production of cannabis, similar to properties searched in Mutley and Prince Rock over the last fortnight.

And police said that the raids, part of Operation Hyena, would continue.

Sgt Phil Prior, neighbourhood beat manager for the area, said he expected officers to be ‘knocking on more doors’.

He said that police on patrol stopped a man in Farringdon Road, St Jude’s, at about 11.30pm and found that he was carrying cash and prescription drugs in a rucksack.

Police then searched the house in Mount Gould Road, where they found the drugs, hydroponic equipment and more prescription drugs.

Sgt Prior said: “It was just an unassuming terraced house in a residential street.”

Police have cordoned off the property and scenes of crime officers made a detailed search of the home which continued until dark last night and resumed this morning.

Sgt Prior said: “This is another excellent result from a stop check by officers out on patrol in the neighbourhood. It is interesting to see how many more of these raids there will be.

“I think we will have a bit of a drive on his and will be knocking on everyone’s door.”

Det Sgt Scott Rothney said that the value of the drugs had not been estimated yet but the number of plants was in the ‘low hundreds’.

A 28-year-old Vietnamese man has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Plymouth magistrates tomorrow charged with being concerned with the production of ccanbis.
