COLLISION: A Ford Focus involved in the accident is removed from the scene

A MAN was killed in an accident on the A38 at South Brent at the weekend.

The incident happened at about 3.25am on Saturday by the South Brent junction.

Police were called to a report of a collision between a Ford Focus and a pedestrian on the Exeter-bound carriageway.

The pedestrian, believed to be a 42-year-old from Aberystwyth in Wales, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man is thought to have been with a group of others in a white van which had stopped at the nearby service station.

The driver of the Ford Focus, a man from the Plymouth area, was uninjured.

The road was closed for several hours with a local diversion in place allowing for a detailed examination of the scene.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police appealed for witnesses to come forward.

"At this moment it is unclear what actually happened," the spokesman said.

"We believe he was with a group which had stopped off at the petrol station. He became separated from the group and ended up in the road. There is no indication that the car left the carriageway.

"We are liaising with the occupants of the van to provide us with some information. We are also asking the garage to provide us with CCTV footage if they have it."

The coroner has been informed.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the police on 08452 777444.
