Man 'planned to give boy a lift to meet his parents'

Tuesday, August 26, 2008, 20:11

A MAN accused of attempting to abduct a child said he planned to give the boy a lift home and meet his parents, a court heard.

James Sibley, 42, yesterday told Plymouth Crown Court he started chatting with the eight-year-old outside the Windmill pub, in Whitleigh.

After buying him a drink and chatting for a while he said the question of driving him home arose.

Sibley, who arrived in Plymouth the previous day with his caravan, told the court he thought the boy's parents would act like a "springboard" for meeting other people.

Sibley later told the judge, James Tabor QC, he changed his mind on taking the boy home.

He said he knew the scooter wouldn't fit in the car and it was a way of pulling out of the agreement without upsetting the boy.

Sibley, from Hillsboro, near Bridgwater, denies attempting to abduct a child on October 24, 2007.

He also denies two charges of possessing indecent photographs of children and one count of taking indecent photographs of a child.

The trial continues.
