Mother and daughter escape fire

Wednesday, August 27, 2008, 07:00

A MOTHER and her five-year-old daughter were saved by their fire alarm after a blaze tore through their house in St Judes.

Donna Tanner, 34, was upstairs with daughter Grace when the fire broke out at the house she shares with husband Mark just after 3pm yesterday.

Mrs Tanner said: "I thought it was just the fire alarm playing up but then when I looked at the kitchen door I could see thick black smoke.

"I walked into the dining room and all I could see was bright orange flames and two or three feet of smoke."

Mrs Tanner managed to rescue Grace and two dogs from the house, escaping through the front door.

She added: "The main thing is we're both all right, but there's so much stuff, things people gave us, that we'll never get back.

"The chandelier has melted and the original art deco doors are burnt. Everything is covered in dust; my poor house."

She said she was still shocked, but had been touched by the community spirit shown by neighbours in helping the family in the aftermath of the blaze.

Fire services were called by a concerned neighbour and two crews from Greenbank attended the scene with Watch Commander Searle in charge.

The ground floor of the property was severely damaged by fire and smoke, while the first floor was also smoke damaged.

The cause of the fire, which is thought to have started in the utility room to the rear of the house, is not being treated as suspicious.
