Nuclear protest at dockyard

Friday, August 22, 2008, 07:41

ONE man was arrested during an anti-nuclear protest at Devonport dockyards today.

Daniel Viesnik – who had come down from London to protest with 12 other members of Trident Ploughshares – was arrested for 'obstructing the highway', after he repeatedly lay in the road.

Six members of anti-nuclear weapons group Ploughshares locked themselves onto a ladder which was hooked onto a wheelchair and laid across the main road into Devonport's Naval base.

Ploughshare member Shirley Law, said: "After Dan unlocked himself from the ladder he went and lay down in the road on his own and was arrested.

"He's ok and will be released later today."

"It was the first demonstration we've done for six months down here as we've been busy with other protests at the Atomic Weapons Establishment near Aldermaston so we decided to concentrate locally for a day."
