Plymouth hit by flash flooding
Monday, November 10, 2008, 09:43
The stretch of road running parrallel to the river Plym, near to the Texaco garage has become so flooded in parts that vehicles are driving with brown water up to their number-plates and headlights.
A spokeswoman for Plymouth City Council, said: "We'd like to ask the public to bear with us as we are doing our best to react to situations as soon as we can, but this is a very busy time for our parks and highways services."
"There are approximately 33,000 drains in the city."
Other parts of the city were also underwater as torrential rain continued to lash down.
One driver described a 'virtual river of water', pouring down Outland road, past the turning for the Cherry Tree Inn, all the way past Devonport High School for Girls, at 9am this morning.
Several inches of water washed down the carriageway meaning cars couldn't use the inside lane towards Manadon.
Gardens and the main path leading to residents front doors in St Peters Road at the Manadon end of Honicknowle, were flooded meaning two elderly residents couldn't get out of their houses.
Resident Roy Tossell, said: "There is a good foot of water on some parts of the path.
"The gardens are lower then the road so the water comes off the road, especially as the drains get blocked by leaves, I've already been out twice to clear them today and now I'm soaking.
"This happens every year."

Plymouth City council have reported lots of localised flooding in various parts of the city.
Council workers have cleared three trees that blew down in Central Park this morning.
A spokesperson for the Council, said: "The bad weather is causing a few issues at the moment and we are dealing with them as and when we receive calls. So far today we've cleaned up three fallen trees and are working our way around the city to help unblock drains and clear up localised flooding."
"Falling leaves cause problems with drainage at this time of year and coupled with the heavy rain we're getting, this is causing some localised flooding.
Parts of Miller Way near to the Tamar Science Park are also reported to be flooded, causing tailbacks to vehicles in both directions.

It would be much more appropriate to have an outsized bronze or even brightly coloured acryllic statue of one of Beryl Cook's Janner women.
