Police in appeal for 'flasher' witnesses
Thursday, November 20, 2008, 18:57
Investigators say two similar cases over the past few months have led them to believe that the suspect may have targeted other women who have failed to report it to police.
The first reported incident was in mid August, when a woman was out power-walking along Station Road, towards Warleigh Point nature reserve in Tamerton Foliot.
Police said the woman was walking along the road at around 5pm when she noticed a green Vauxhall Vectra estate car pass her, heading towards the reserve.
Half a mile later she saw a man standing beside the car with his trousers down performing an indecent act upon himself as he stared at her. She turned and ran, and a short while later he overtook her.
A second incident, in mid October, bore similar features, with a female jogger accosted in the same area by a similar looking man.
One of the incidents was reported to police by a third party, and investigators are concerned there may have been more incidents in recent months, but the victims have chosen not to contact them.
The man was described as white, aged between 30 and 40 years, 5ft 8ins tall, with dark brown hair just touching his shoulders. He was clean shaven, wore a dark baseball cap, a lumberjack quilted red and white check shirt, army-style lightweight khaki green trousers, black work boots with white dusts on them. The green Vectra car had a yellow diamond sign in the back window, similar to the "baby on board" signs.
A spokesman for police said: "We would appeal to other females who may have been victims of this suspect over the past few months, but did not feel it was important enough to contact the police.
"Any information you have may assist us and we are keen to build up a fuller picture.
"Our primary concern is that while he has so far merely stared at the victims, there is the possibility there could be an escalation in his behaviour."
Anyone with information should call police on 08452 777444 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 quoting crime reference number EL/08/6973.
