The five companies were honoured for their 'outstanding customer service' in the national awards scheme.
The Swift Awards recognise 'unsung' businesses in every major city in the UK, which – according to judges – deliver the quickest, most reliable and best-value service.
The 2008 Plymouth winners were Wembury's Dogchester Dog Hotel, The Jaws fish and chip shop in Cumberland Street, and Harwell Veterinary Centre in Peverell Park. Golden Ticket Travel in West Park and Smart Cars in Millbay Road also scooped prizes.
The five businesses were chosen following a judging review, which assessed a shortlist of more than 50 firms across the city.
The criteria investigated how each business sets prices, resolves complaints, retains loyal customers and exceeds expectations.
The winners become members of an elite group of businesses from more than 30 UK cities that have achieved Swift Award winning status. They will enjoy privileges such as a listing in a free 24-hour directory detailing best-value businesses in the region, as well as the right to display Swift Award winner window stickers. The judges said that staff from the Dogchester Hotel demonstrated 'a strong commitment to providing excellent customer care'. Owner Alison Short makes a 400-mile round-trip to collect and return a sick 15-year-old Golden Retriever, who she cares for.
She said: “I am possibly barking mad to do such a job but I am delighted to win this award.
“All the dogs are going to have a special treat because if it weren't for them and the customers, I wouldn't have won anything.”
New company Smart Cars only started nine months ago. Customers pay only for mileage, not time.
Manager Harry Hunter-Young said: “I am delighted to win this award. It's a real achievement considering this is a new venture.”
Tina Shortle, marketing director of online insurance company swiftcover.com, which sponsored the awards, said: “It's not often that you hear of a taxi company or a dog kennel winning a business award – but uncovering hidden gems is what the Swift Awards are all about.”
