Wednesday, November 18, 2009, 11:47

THE Sound of Music, Hairspray and The Rocky Horror Show will be the musical heart of an entertainment-packed season at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth, this spring.

Noel Coward, Kenneth Williams and Alan Bennet will sit side by side with big-name productions including The Hobbit, Sleeping Beauty, Oh What A Lovely War and Whistle Down the Wind.

Alison Steadman, David Troughton, Belinda Lang, Lee Mead, Anita Harris, Gary Wilmot and Brian Conley are just a few of the big-name stars who will grace the stage in Plymouth from February 2010.

Adrian Vinken, Chief Executive, Theatre Royal Plymouth, said: "The Theatre Royal exists to enrich the lives of all sections of our community both in Plymouth and beyond therefore we programme a particularly diverse range of productions ensuring we are able to offer ‘something for everyone."

The season starts on February 1 with Present Laughter, a witty portrait of the life of Noël Coward in his heyday starring Robert Bathurst and Belinda Lang - who also directs.

Stop Messing About puts Kenneth William's waspish wit centre stage next, with outrageously funny sketches, parodies and songs.

The story that started it all, The Hobbit, will run from February 16 to 21, tracing Bilbo Baggins's quest, a journey which pits him against the dragon Smaug and finally leaves him in possession of The Ring.

This will be followed by two productions from the Hofesh Schechter Company, Uprising and In Your Rooms before Alan Bennett's comedy Enjoy. with Alison Steadman and David Troughton.

The Wilde story Lord Arthur Savile's Crime is next with Any Dream Will Do winner Lee Mead, before the Birmigham Royal Ballet return with The Sleeping Beauty.

As we move into April, the Theatre Royal will host Fatal Encounter and an all star cast which includes Nicholas Ball, Anita Harris, Neil Stacey, Michael Howe, Susan Skipper and Michael Kirk.

Then the Welsh National Opera perform Tosca, Carmen and The Abduction.

Oh What a Lovely War is next,an entertaining ride through the ironies and tragedies of the First World War.

As spring ends and summer begins the Theatre Royal will host four major shows sure to bring in huge crowds, Whistle Down the Wind, The Rocky Horror Show, Hairspray and The Sound of Music.

At the same time in the Drum Theatre, Plymouth will enjoy Down Town Dash, School Ties, The Missionary’s Position, The Furies/Land of the Dead/Helter Skelter, a Short Play Festival, Eurydice, Cling To Me Like Ivy, How Cold My Toes, Meeting Joe Strummer, Adult Child / Dead Child, Home of the Wriggler, Funky Llama Cabaret Night, Pub Rock and No Idea.
