Babcock Marine has completed a refit which has extended the life of the Trafalgar class nuclear-powered submarine by two years.
The submarine is returning to operational duties with the latest Tomahawk cruise missiles, which can fly a third further than their predecessors.
The missiles can now hit targets 1,000 miles away with pinpoint accuracy and can be redirected to another target in flight. The missile's camera can even transmit images in flight back to the submarine to aid intelligence-gathering.
New computers and communication systems will improve links with allied forces on operations and will improve ship-to-shore links while in port.
The submarine has a new network which has better compatibility with the MoD's communication systems.
HMS Turbulent has also had a full programme of maintenance carried out.
Minister for Defence Equipment and Support Baroness Taylor said: "This project is an important investment in the submarine fleet, equipping the crew with the latest technology. This not only facilitates operations, but also provides links back to land for those serving in the unusual conditions aboard a submarine which can give a real boost to morale.
"Turbulent's return to operational duties is key to the delivery of the high-readiness attack submarine force and is an example of how we work with industry to provide the front-line with the equipment and capabilities it needs."
Devonport is currently carrying out major repairs and servicing to two other Trafalgar class submarines, HMS Tireless and Triumph.
