UK's biggest fuel protest to be held in Plymouth
Lorry drivers, bikers, motorists, taxi-drivers, farmers and businesses are expected to take part in a massive city demonstration on Sunday, June 22 over the rising price of fuel.
Organiser Bob Cole said: “This event is for everyone, every man, woman and child as fuel prices affect everyone. Food, clothing, utilities, everything goes up with it.
“We hope everyone across the whole of Devon and Cornwall will attend the largest protest yet, be it on foot, bicycles, horseback, tractors, camper vans, lorries or cars.
“People from all walks of life need to show that the Great British bulldog has not rolled over and died.”
Protesters plan to congregate on the Plymbridge Road, Estover in Plymouth from 11am, and follow a nine-mile route through the town, finishing at the Marsh Mills roundabout. People can then either disperse or meet on the Plymouth Hoe for a family picnic.
Mr Cole said: “As a nation we are great complainers, but reluctant to do much about it. If we take that attitude the Government will believe they can do as they wish.
“It's time we all stood and made them listen. If you only ever make one protest in your life, make it this one.”
In other countries fuel price increases have seen major protests, yet the cost per litre is half that paid in the UK, he said.
The organisers have written to motorcycle and motoring clubs in the South West calling for their support and want businesses to join in too.
Campaigners hope the event will be peaceful, and residents from smaller towns and villages will join them.
