Windows onto the world of fashion

Thursday, October 30, 2008, 20:43

CITY centre shops went head-to-head yesterday in a Live Window Display Competition as part of Plymouth Style Week.

From underwear to skiwear, the shops put their creative talents to the test with amazing displays which all proved to be show stoppers for the crowds, despite the wet weather.

From underwear to skiwear, the shops put their creative talents to the test with amazing displays which all proved to be show stoppers for the crowds, despite the wet weather.

Marks & Spencer scooped the top prize with its Christmas Snow White-themned display featuring star divers Tonia Couch and Brooke Graddon, while an Oscar Wilde-inspired window ensured second place for Debenhams and Sienna Lingerie came third.

Store manager of winners M&S, Lee Boon, said: “We wanted to do something impactive and were lucky to get Tonia and Brooke who were willing to help.”

Meanwhile, Principles had a dance-inspired window with upbeat music enticing people to stop and look.

Store manager Sarah Smith said: “Customers have said ‘thank you for cheering us up’. We’ve had a fabulous reaction.”

Lawsons had a very interactive window featuring children making biscuits and pizza.

Richard Duddridge said: “Kids in the kitchen is an up-and-coming area, so we wanted to encourage children through our window.”

Shoppers were also kept happy at Surfing Life where the window display featured cheeky summer surfers and winter skiwear. Owner John Fordy said: “We wanted to do something that would make people smile, and stop and come in, as well as reflect what we sell.”

The competition, which ran between 11am and 3pm was judged by The Herald editor, Bill Martin, Plymouth City Centre Company managing director David Draffan, Radio Devon presenter Gordon Sparks, and Faces of Plymouth Debbie Grayson and Danny Harris.

Eros for Devonport It would be much more appropriate to have an outsized bronze or even brightly coloured acryllic statue of one of Beryl Cook's Janner women.

An artist wants to put a £250,000 copy of 'Eros' on Devonport Column, is this a good idea?
