First op at new eye hospital
THE first operation at the Royal Eye Infirmary's new £5million purpose-built home was scheduled to take place this morning.
The specialist eye hospital, which had resided in Mutley for more than 100 years, was to officially welcome patients to its new base at Derriford Hospital today. The world-beating centre treats more than 50,000 patients every year.
The move began last Wednesday and staff marked the milestone by rolling a giant eyeball from their former home to the hospital at the weekend.
Among the new facilities are two custom-built operating theatres, two minor procedure rooms, 30 clinic and assessment rooms, a modern dispensing opticians facility and a dedicated drop-off zone for patients.
