An open or shut case?

I was in the City Centre yesterday on a pretty cold day by Plymouth standards. I noticed many shops with their doors wide open and vast amounts of heat having to be used to keep the sales assistants in their flimsy uniforms warm. I went into one shop and shut the door. I thought I was being helpful. Another person came in and opened and shut the door - he was thinking the same as me. I noticed one sales assistant getting very agitated by this and he stormed to the door and opened it wide. I thought this all rather sad. Had his training told him that more people come into shops that have their doors wide open? I rather doubt it.

“The small Londis/Post Office round the corner from me keeps its doors open all the time. I shut them once and was told by the freezing shop assistant that there was an open door policy and the shop doors had to be open all the time the store was open. Yesterday it was -2 degrees here and the shop door would have to be kept open. The said shop assistant has since left - can you blame her - and personally I prefer to shop somewhere that shuts its doors in order to keep the heat in. As someone else commented: you can tell if a shop is open by the 'open' sign on the door and the fact all the lights are on.”

    "Not really Strongbowman

I thought the assistant was a total w*****r and needed a good t******g."

and arent you brave winston expressing that opinion on the internet after the event.... :P

why was this even printed? ill tell you why he most likly left the door open mate, shops even in winter seem to overheat the buildings so much you sweat just walking around them, particulay the case in the drakes circus stores I find, did you not think the staff had been getting a bit hot so had opened the door to cool down a bit?

I fail to see why this was even worthy of a letter to the paper? do you write in about every little event that happens in your day?”

“I think the public are generally regarded as being thick these days so a closed door would suggest a closed store. Shops spend a fortune trying to keep themselves and the whole town centre warm in the winter and a fortune trying to cool themselves down with air conditioners during the summer. The cost of which they expect the customers to bare. They wonder why so many shops are closing down - my internet shopping has one small fan on the side of my pc case to keep things running right and I can usually buy cheaper and quicker online so I do.
They should also BAN Drive through takeaways - fat people too lazy to park their cars and stand in a queue to buy junk food to make them even fatter! All the while sat there in their cars going nowhere and polluting the atmosphere. I mean they would moan like hell if they were stuck in a traffic jam but don`t think twice about it if there is food on the end of it. Crazy world we live in. Government ought to ban all drive throughs or tax the food they serve.”

“People do not open closed doors, it is that simple. Give a customer the slightest opportunity not to use your business and they will take it”

“It's probably so that any shoppers injuring themselves on the thousands of broken and loose paving stones in the city centre so neglected by our flaky city council can be quickly moved indoors to await help.”

“A closed shop door could indicate an armed robbery is taking place. If you can see a getaway car nearby you should phone the police immediately.”
