THE old Greenbank Prison has become an eyesore – plain and simple.

For years this once impressive building has been falling into a state of dereliction and is now a blot on our cityscape.

So proposals to breathe new life back into the site by German supermarket giant Aldi are to be welcomed.

It is important, however, that understandable enthusiasm to redevelop this site does not blind any of us to the very real need to consider the impact on neighbouring businesses and residents.

Previous proposals for a supermarket with a car park were rejected in the 1990s. There appears to be a more constructive approach to the latest attempt to redevelop the site with consultations with both the council and the local community taking place before the final plan is drawn up.

It must be hoped that this process of consultation will be successful and we can look forward to this landmark building claiming a place in the city's future as well as its past.

“Would this include the old police station from which the Plymouth air raid siren was sounded during World War II which was bombed through the roof in a building which is one of the very few buildings remaining in Plymouth which bears the coat of arms. Would Freemasonry have the High Priestess of Plymouth eradicate all memory of their lines from all minds.”
