They should pay

WHILE I cannot disagree with the idea of the camera cars policing bus lanes to ensure that only buses and taxis use them, I feel that taxpayers' money should not be used for this purpose. All the buses that operate in and around Plymouth are operated by private companies. Therefore I feel they should pay for the cost of purchasing the vehicles and employing the people who operate them. The taxpayers of Plymouth have a large enough burden to carry as it is, with the amount that the council charges in taxes, without subsidising private companies.

“Whilst on this subject, im thinking about fixing a camera to my car and filming the buses and taxis blocking up carriageways whilst collecting or waiting for passengers. Then campainging against it. Bus stop full? Carry on, dont block the road up!!! And as for taxis blocking lanes in certain parts of the city, outside there allocated waiting bays, id get done for that. Prix”

“Most buses drive around for the best part of the day nearly empty.

6 miles to gallon of Cancer Fuel (diesel).

I'm amazed they are even viable. Without the Taxpayers subsidising them probably not.

Still the council have just wasted £20 million plus on a bus lane.

    Just more Social engineering.

    Protect the Enviorment a CON.”

“More bus and taxi lanes please . It is commonsense and taxci drivers love them. . And to the ones that get all hyped up when they see a cab go past them.... pay thousands in test fees and yearly fees to the council and hey ... you can do it to .... in the meantime suckers, bye bye ,got ahead of you by 30 minutes - all day and everyday . ha ha .”

“I think most of us who actually think before commenting know that bus lanes exist in order to make them a faster and therefore more appealing!! method of transport than our cars. Therefore reducing pollution etc blah blah.

I do think this whole question is however very interesting and it has some merit, maybe someone in the know can answer why the tax payer pays for the policing and clearing of what are essentially private roads??

I also think the use of bicycles in them is an issue, I use buses all the time from the city centre to the elburton area. I frankly like the idea of shooting past all the cars and getting home early. It never happens though because some chimp on his pushbike is hogging the BUS lane and we crawl along, usually as we cross the bridge where any sensible cyclist leaves the road for the pavement (which is a cycle lane)..

Bus lanes for buses only, simples..”

“Why can't buses have a rear facing camera to film cars following them, get the number plate and send out an automatic fine to all idiots who use bus lanes. This would make a huge profit for the council. The buses could have a notice on the back to tell motorists that they are being filmed then there is no excuse. The slip road from Crownhill down to the Manadon roundabout is the most dangerous in Plymouth, where cars bound for Mutley get into the left hand lane which is Exeter and buses only. They then go straight on, forcing cars in the (correct) right hand lane to brake sharply. One day soon a heavy lorry will be in the right hand lane bound for Mutley and will shunt some idiot in the left hand lane right over the barrier onto to A38 below, a tragedy just waiting to happen but unfortunately it will serve them right.”
