“While I agree with Cathtreehug's condemnation of Herr Hitler, we must remember that he and his Luftwaffe were not the only - or even the worst - of the destroyers of Plymouth. The raids stopped suddenly and we often said that this was because Der Fuhrer had seen the City Council's Plan For Plymouth, and saw no reason for continuing the expensive bombing raids when the council were going to demolish everything that was still standing.
I do remember vividly the first bomb that fell on Plymouth. It was during the afternoon on a clear sunny day. There was no warning and suddenly we heard the shrill whistle of a single falling bomb followed by an explosion as it struck a few streets away. My mother grabbed me and dived under the kitchen sink, which would have offered little protection if we had been hit.”
