Bid to drive Plymouth's cultural agenda

Friday, November 21, 2008, 07:40

PLYMOUTH is looking for people with the "vital spark" to drive forward the city's cultural ambitions.

A new Cultural Board is being set up to oversee the city's cultural strategy, called "The Vital Spark", and drive forward Plymouth's vision to become a leading, thriving centre of creativity and cultural activity.

The board will champion Plymouth's cultural sector locally, regionally and nationally and ensure that culture plays a pivotal role in shaping the future regeneration of the city.

It will advise the local strategic partnership Plymouth 2020, the city council and the City Development Company on cultural development and lead efforts to attract investment in the cultural sector.

Councillor Glenn Jordan, the Cabinet member for community health and leisure, said: "Culture is not just about music, local history and the arts, it covers all the things that make somewhere an attractive and stimulating place to live, work and visit – from places to eat and drink or meet up with friends to evening classes and community work.

"Our vision is for Plymouth to be seen as a vibrant city which makes the most of its fabulous waterfront location, maritime heritage and natural surroundings, while offering residents a fantastic quality of life.

"Improving cultural opportunities will not only have a direct benefit for local residents but will also contribute to the long-term regeneration of the city by attracting visitors, businesses and investors and boosting the local economy."

Alison Hernandez, the Local Strategic Partnership manager, said: "We are looking for people with experience of working in the cultural and creative sectors who either live in or have strong links with the city.

"They will need to show a passion for developing cultural opportunities in Plymouth and have a good network of contacts that can help promote the city's profile on a regional and national level."

All positions are voluntary but expenses will be paid. Board members will be asked to attend about six meetings a year and will need to commit two days a month to the role.

The chair of the Board will be expected to give more time.

For an information pack and details on how to apply or to arrange an informal discussion about the positions contact Kathy Williams on 01752 307013 or email kathy.williams@plymouth.gov.uk

Details are also available online at www.plymouth.gov.uk/lspculturalboard. Applications must be received by Friday 5 December.
