Why prevent people dying with dignity?

SURELY it's time for this Government and the medical profession to see sense and change the ruling on euthanasia.

Why do people who are so sure that they have had more than enough of living in pain and the loss of dignity have to leave their land of birth to put an end to their lives?

Surely these are the people that know, are aware, of what they want to do with their lives. Not some judge, some doctor who took some oath to save lives at whatever cost.

It is not only the ones that are ill that suffer and face it everyday, but the carers also.

I see another has chosen to do the right thing in his mind and put an end to his life here in Britain. I'm sure our condolences go to his wife but if this is what the man wanted then it's his right.

We all saw the distress caused by the gentleman who decided in court the applicant had no right to end his life despite being a complete prisoner in his own body and having to be looked after completely in all matters of life continuance.

This man also knew his own mind and indeed despite the court passed away days later.

This must have been a huge relief to his wife to know all the suffering was at an end and her husband was at peace. Yet again our condolences are with his family.

That said there has to be many, many more in similar circumstances who feel that they have borne more than enough and see that taking that journey abroad is their only way to release.

This is wrong. If people are so ill and feel their life is no longer dignified and had more than enough of the pain, then they should be allowed to call an end to their pain and discomfort at home, not have to worry that their loved ones could also face the wrath of the legal profession in so-called assisted suicide.

In this area people are treated worse than animals because let's face it any animal in severe distress or pain has its life ended. People on the other hand do not get this freedom of choice.

It's time to change the law.

“The fact is that the decision is yours but as soon as you require help to achieve the goal, it poses problems for those you approach. How can a doctor proceed with help knowing that he may be prosecuted and lose his job? How can your relatives help without fear of being arrested?
That's why this needs to be discussed and policies changed.
The thought of someone having to go abroad to die is ridiculous and makes the process even more upsetting than it needs to be.”

“If I was in this situation to be honest I wouldnt care if its legal or not, my body my rules y`know, there are some things the government should keep its nose out of.”

“@ niugnepyzarc - I agree with you but there's a need for discussion and an agreed policy from government and, possibly, a review of the law on assisted dying. Once the policy is in place then the decisions and process can proceed without fear of prosecution for the family and with peace of mind for the medical profession.
The 'majority' is needed to persuade the government that there is a need for review and to gauge the feelings of the people. At the moment they are afraid to take the subject on.”

“blogtodi why should `the majority` have any say over a persons individual wants and needs? this is a private matter for the people involved I think in most cases they dont care what `the majority` think, it is after all there life and there body.”

“This is such a personal issue. Each of us has views on ending of our own lives. Could this personal subject not then be decided by a referendum? Would individuals be happy to go with the majority?
The outcome of the referendum might be interesting but would you want to be bound by its decision?
    Difficult, isn't it?
It's wrong that someone with power like Lady Campbell is using her own personal feelings to influence government but that's what happens in all aspects of government. That's why the politicians are there; to voice their own beliefs.
Something like this needs proper discussion without religious pressures or the likes of Lady Campbell (at least not in her role as peer, maybe as an equal to the rest of us).
But who will take up the challenge? Which party will start it off?”

“it makes me feel really sad when you have to ask if you can die when its your own body and know when you dont wont to carry on with life, but if a animal was to suffer they put them down with no questions asked whot a world we live in”

“The problem is that so whose lives are intolerable but are able to commit suicide do so but those who are unable to do so but wish to end a meaningless life cannot. It is unfair and needs to be debated seriously without resource to Jane Campbell who, as has been pointed out, is a very narrow minded selfish person with no regard for others.”

“Spare does pain; mine, yours. Even again, does my choice spoil yours? Ever again does a stream give dream. In each, every, an individual wisdom choice. A.'.A.'.”

“The difficulty with enabling euthanasia is that suicide cults are then able to justify their actions. It is a difficult question; one which Steven Hawkin and myself are considering in the void of the abyss.”
