Exhibition:

'VOICES' - exhibition of Quilt Art

Saturday 14 January - Sunday 26 February 2012

Another

exciting exhibition hosted at this large contemporary craft gallery located on

the edge of Dartmoor.

International, professional quilt makers have produced highly individual work which is

brought together by a shared vision: to achieve wider recognition of the quilt

- but as contemporary art.

Historically, quilting is not given the same prestige as fine art and is usually thought of as folksy, domestic and functional. The work

on show here challenges these ideas as exhibitors apply to their quilts a unique

variety of artistic approaches such as paint, digital and screen printing,

large-scale pleating, text/type and collage.

Viewed

hanging, laid flat - and even heaped, in the gallery these pieces move closer to an

art form. The internationalism of the Quilt Art group – members are from the

United

Kingdom,

Ireland,

Belgium,

Hungary,

Germany,

the Netherlands,

Denmark

and United

States of America

– suggests that older textile-based traditions are developing into new cultural

stories. Visitors can also 'patch it themselves' and add to a large DIY quilt in the gallery. A special free, 'drop in and quilt' family day runs on 18 February (10am-4pm).
