Smith (pictured), just 13, won the ultra-competitive band two of the Woolwell Table Tennis Club £1,000 Super Series over a weekend at Okehampton and Woolwell.
The teenager had missed the first two rounds of the Thornton's Sport and Leisure and Viridor Waste Management-sponsored tournament, but has now soared to the top of the standings and is in contention for a £100 first prize at the finals at Woolwell on December 14.
Other city players also made their mark on the event.
Richard Marshall and Chris Smith were absent making their first-team debuts for Devon at Cippenham, and Paul Whiting dominated the band one event.
Twelve-year-old Ollie Buddell caused an upset in band two by beating previous winner Sam Wilson, who was also defeated by Sam Hurst and 13-year-old Naomi Jackson.
Buddell finished third in band two, while the impressive Smith turned over Ben Cunningham in the quarter-finals, followed by Hurst in the semis.
Smith finished a good day by defeating Sean Mills – who beat Buddell in the semis – 8-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-9.
In band four, Woolwell's Beth Wilson lost out to Shawn Haskell, whose nine-year-old son Edward was the youngest player in the tournament.
