Cannons coach eases pressure on winless team

Friday, November 14, 2008, 07:00

PLYMOUTH Marjons Cannons players are being given the weekend off to help them start winning again.

Coach George Hatchell, whose side are bottom of EBL2 after losing their three opening games, doesn't want his players to become over pressurised.

There is no league game or cup tie scheduled for Cannons this weekend and Hatchell has not organised a friendly.

He said: "Maybe I'm pushing them too hard and putting too much pressure on them, I don't know, but at the end of the day, our players are paying to play – they're not professionals.

"I want to let the guys relax and we'll have some fun training sessions, although they'll still be working hard.

"We've got four training sessions to sort ourselves out and hopefully start winning again and we'll go from there.

"Next week, we'll get down to some more serious work."

Cannons' next game is on November 23, when they play Leicester Riders at home.

Meanwhile, Raiders II will be told to forget the euphoria of reaching the last eight of the National Cup and focus on tomorrow's EBL2 clash at third-placed Leeds Carnegie.

Raiders II are fourth in the table, having played less matches than their northern rivals.

Last weekend, the Plymouth side defeated EBL1 Taunton Tigers a nerve-wracking 70-69 at the Kitto Centre to take their second higher division scalp.

Raiders II new coach Tom Kambouris made it clear, however, that he was taking one game at a time.

When asked about his team's next opponents in the cup – EBL3 Brixton at the Pavilions – said: "At the moment, I'm just concentrating on this week's game against Leeds."
