Raiders get a sinking sensation

Saturday, November 15, 2008, 07:00

AIRWAVES Plymouth Raiders stars practiced some dunking – but wasn't the sort they are normally used to.

Team members like DeAntoine Beasley and Terrence Durham might have been expected to have been all at sea when they were let loose on HMS Raleigh's multi-million pound sinking ship simulator – dubbed Havoc.

Usually, Raiders would be more interested in plugging leaks in their defence, rather than in a ship.

But some new skills surfaced as the Raiders worked together to stem a flow of water through holes in the hull, using wooden wedges and hammers.

To add to the fun, the simulator rocked from side to side as the 'emergency' operation took place.

The training session was set up thanks to the city team's close links with the Royal Navy – Raiders regularly use the gymnasium at HMS Drake.

Players admitted to being a bit out of their depth at first – but said they soon got to like the drill.

One of the players, Patrick Fitzpatrick, said: "The training was fantastic, but at first it was scary.

"When you feel the temperature of the water and the lights go out simultaneously, you realise it's the real deal."

The team were hosted by Leading Physical Trainer Joe Thornton, 26, from Laira.

He said: "I've been following the Raiders since I was 13 and have met the players a few times before. It's great to have them here to give them the chance to experience some Navy style training."
