Wounded Raiders prepare for critical trip

Friday, February 05, 2010, 07:00

PLYMOUTH Raiders coach Gary Stronach has revealed his squad is carrying several injuries ahead of a crunch BBL Championship double-header this weekend.

Stronach said 'three or four' of his players were carrying injuries of varying severity.

The worst of those is probably forward Matt Hilleary, who is nursing a badly-sprained ankle.

Hilleary, Plymouth Raiders' starting small-forward, injured the ankle in training on January 21.

It has now ruled him out of three contests, which Raiders have all lost.

Hilleary has begun light training ahead of Raiders' joust with Worcester Wolves at Worcester University tomorrow (7pm).

Forward Terry Horton is also known to be carrying a knock.

The Plymouth outfit, who are 11th from 13 teams in the BBL with a 5-14 record, take on bottom outfit Essex Pirates at the Pavilions on Sunday afternoon (4pm).

But Stronach insisted his main focus at present was Raiders' first game against Worcester.

The Plymouth coach described tomorrow and Sunday as a big weekend for his team.

Wolves are just two points ahead of Raiders, while Pirates are four behind with six.

Stronach said: "It's a big weekend for us because both of the teams we are playing are close to us.

"We realise we've got to beat these teams if we want to make the play-offs.

"But I don't see this weekend as make or break, not with 17 games still to go.

"We're well aware Essex and Worcester and Guildford Heat have a chance of making eighth place and the final play-off spot.

"We're still in the race, but we need to win the majority of our games to do it."

Stronach's team had a poor start to the season, but have recovered to pull themselves away from the foot of the table, although recent results have not been good.

The Plymouth coach admitted: "We need to get a run going again – it's a confidence thing and an injury thing.

"We've got a number of injuries, two or three, or maybe four players, who are carrying knocks.

"They vary from one end of the spectrum to the other, but we're not saying anything right now, because it's a bit early to tell who's going to be fit and who's not.

"Matt Hilleary has started light training this week.

"Hopefully, we'll have as many people as possible suited up and ready to play Wolves."

The last time the two sides played each other, it was Wolves who came out the better with a narrow 85-83 BBL Trophy first round victory, meaning tomorrow's game could go either way.

Raiders had trailed for the entire match until the final minute, but threes from Modestas Sidlauskas and, decisively, Rod Middleton ensured it was Worcester who progressed to the last eight.

Worcester, though they have home advantage, have only beaten Raiders twice in their history, the most recent in the BBL Trophy.

Wolves coach Paul James, formerly with 2006/07 BBL Championship winners Heat, said on Plymouth: "We had them in the first round of the Trophy.

"But in (Tino) Valencia and (Drew) Lasker they have two great players. They can beat anybody on their day."
